Parents involved in shooting at time when custody exchange was supposed to happen
Phoenix, AZ – Parents who get into serious disagreements over child custody may start to experience problems with domestic violence. This is a terrible outcome for any family, and they should get assistance before their relations become problematic.
Yahoo News reported on an incident that gained national attention after a shooting that happened during a child custody argument [1].
Two parents argue before a shooting occurs
Court documents stated that the result of the shooting was that one man had died and another woman was seriously injured. One of the victims was a 25 year old male, and the other was his 23 year old girlfriend. The shooter was apparently involved in a relationship with the female victim and had a child with her at some point in the past.
The female victim told the police that the suspect was supposed to arrive with her son for a custody exchange. Instead, he arrived with another adult male who stood watch outside of the apartment while the incident happened. Yelling was heard outside of the apartment before shots were fired. Police later found empty bullet casings and bloodstains in the apartment.
When the female victim’s father arrived as she was receiving medical treatment, he explained to the police that the suspect and his daughter had been having ongoing child custody disputes and issues. The suspect also had an unrelated pending drug charge.
Avoiding child custody arguments
Issues related to custody tend to always be some of the most stressful and contentious for parents. One of the best ways for these problems to be avoided is for each parent to work with their attorney on a custody arrangement that is realistic and provides a good long term solution. The couple can even do this through a settlement if they do not want a judge to be involved in making crucial custody decisions.
Modifying the existing arrangements
If the parents have a legitimate need to change the custody schedule in the future, such as a change in work schedules or a parent who is moving, they need to get legal assistance and formally modify the custody arrangement in place. The custody plan is legally binding until the court approves a new one.
